Hybrid-electric catamaran to Pyramiden

Made for the future – join us today! During the summer of 2021, Hurtigruten Svalbard and Brim Explorer launches a hybrid-electric catamaran to roam the Arctic waters. With our new vessel you can join an exciting and more environmentally friendly boat trip, to the Nordenskïold glacier, and the fascinating Russian town of Pyramiden.

An Arctic ghost town

While the new green technology is something for the future, visiting the town of Pyramiden is like entering a time machine and returning to the Soviet Union. In the 1980s, over 1000 people lived in the city, and it was considered a successful community with school, kindergarten, swimming pool, sports fields and coal mining. In 1998, the Russian mining company Trust Arktikugol closed the coal mine, and the city was vacated in a very short time. Coffee cups are left behind on the tables, books are shattered in the classroom, and the sheet music lies ready on the piano – waiting for someone to play. These days only a handful of people work and live in the city, and for visitors it is a very special experience to get a guided tour around the abandoned buildings.

Unique experiences

The conditions on Svalbard change a lot throughout the year, and a trip to Pyramiden during the midnight sun in May will be different than when the polar night approaches in October. Whatever the season, you can expect unique experiences in beautiful Svalbard nature. Early in the season the Bille fjord may still be ice covered, and landing in Pyramiden will then not be possible. The boat will then instead – silently – follow the ice edge where the opportunity to see wildlife is great! We will also enjoy the beautiful Nordenskiold glacier.

MS Bard is equipped with modern design and innovative technological solutions such as underwater microphones and underwater drones, creating a unique platform for exploring the sea, nature and wildlife beneath, as well as over water.

Practical information

MS Bard is one of the first sightseeing boats in the world to run full-day power tours, specially designed for its purpose. When the boat goes over 10 knots on the transport stages to Barentsburg and Pyramiden, a hybrid solution with brand new, fuel-saving technology enters. When the boat approaches glaciers, wildlife or settlements, it will run silently on 100% energy.

Evening cruise at Isfjorden

Join us on a beautiful evening trip out on the Icefjord with MS Bard. The midnight sun shines beautifully in the evenings and makes this a magical trip. There is no point in going to bed early when you are in Longyearbyen in the summer, and this is a perfect evening trip. The sea is full of wildlife and here the birds will fly along the boat. If you are extra lucky you will also get to experience whales.

MS Bard – A new way to experience Svalbard

MS Bard is a brand new hybrid catamaran specially designed for polar regions. The ship is made with a focus on providing unique experiences, while giving a minimal impact on the environment. The boat is made of recycled and recyclable aluminum which makes Bard energy efficient and light.
The boat has large glass windows that allow you to enjoy the good view even if you want to sit inside. In addition, it has three large decks where you get close to the sea and can admire the Arctic nature.
Bard is also equipped with an underwater drone that can be lowered if the conditions are right for it. Then you can study life below sea level on one of the boat’s three screens.

Midnight sun

Between April and August there is midnight sun on Svalbard. In the evenings the sun shines weaker than during the day and gives a beautiful, calm orange light. The mountains and surroundings glow with the sun and create an incredibly beautiful interplay.

Hybrid-electric catamaran to Barentsburg

Made for the future – join us today! During the summer of 2021, Hurtigruten Svalbard and Brim Explorer launches a hybrid-electric catamaran to roam the Arctic waters. With our new vessel you can join an exciting and more environmentally friendly boat trip to the exciting Russian settlement of Barentsburg.

A little piece of Russia

Barentsburg is with its 450 inhabitants Svalbard’s second largest settlement. The mining community is located on the beautiful Grønfjord, and is operated and owned by the state-owned Russian mining company Trust Arcticugol. There are own coal-fired power stations, hospitals, hotels, schools, kindergartens and cultural and sports buildings. Although there is still mining in the city, tourism is building up to become the most important industry. It is fascinating to visit Barentsburg and it is an experience to combine untouched nature with Russian culture.
